House Of Lords, House Of Lords Members

The House of Lords is more a place of debate these days, members of the house are not elected, they usually pass legislations that have been approved in the Commons. The Houses of Lords members consisit of spiritual, temporal and law lords. Temporal Lords have usually gained their title through birth or have become members because they are life peers, life peers are designated these titles because of great contribution they have given to the nation over their life. Spiritual Lords are members of the clergy usually high ranking official archbishops and the top bishops around the country. The Law Lords help with constitutional tasks in the House of Lords. Just before the start of this millenium the number of members in the House was almost halved as hundreds of peers had their seat in the house taken off them through the lords act.

The Lords can bring forward bills, except of course for financial bills they can only come through the House of commons. The House of Lords members can also offer ideas for changes that can be made to any motions that have been agreed in the commons, and due to this the commons must seriously consider any proposals that are made before the motions are made into a law of the land. The Lords have the power to put a hold on any laws that are trying to be passed, but they can only hold them up for anything up to a year, this is good if they think the government is trying to pass something that will not be beneficial to the country and they can slow down the process to look further into it to make necessary changes.

The members in the House of Lords have a restricted amount of power because in this day and age people believe, and rightly so, that a house that is not elected by the public should only be able to have an opinion in certain issues that may affect the public. The public opinion of the house is not very good, they would like to see it done away with even though there is little power within its walls, but they just see it as an elitist place, you scratch my back and all that.
